Do you know the Side Effects of Antacids

SIDE EFFECTS of ANTACIDS

Antacids are a group of medicines which helps to neutralise the acid content of the stomach or block the secretion of stomach acid.

Antacids neutralise the acid in the stomach because the chemicals in antacids are bases (alkalis) which are the opposite of acids. A reaction between an acid and base is called neutralisation. This neutralisation makes the stomach contents less corrosive. This can help to relieve the pain associated with ulcers and the burning sensation in hyper acidity.

Some antacids are available which are using for completely suppress or block the secretion of natural acid or gastric secretions in stomach for immediate relief to patients, which are more dangerous than neutralising antacids.

If you take antacids (Pills or Syrup) for long time, your stomach acid can be decreased below the required level. When you neutralize or block your stomach acid, you dull the stomach’s anti-microbial defense system and increase your risk of food poisoning from various types of bacteria. And without enough acid, your stomach won’t properly absorb nutrients like calcium, putting you at increased risk of bone fractures. Change in acid balance can also interfere with absorption of other medications that you take regularly.

The most common problems associated with long term use of antacids are :

1. Diarrhea

Due to reduced stomach acid some food particles, specially protein remain undigested and too large to absorbed into the blood stream. The undigested protein then passes into the large bowel or intestine, where it draws extra fluid. Bacteria present in the bowel ferment the undigested protein and create excessive amounts of gas. This results in abdominal bloating, flatulence and frequent watery stools.

2. Decreased absorptions of a variety of nutrients

Stomach acid is required for the absorption of folic acid, ascorbic acid, iron, calcium, magnesium and zinc.

3. Electrolyte imbalance

Some antacids may cause acid base and electrolyte disturbances in the body. This may cause serious problems related to heart, brain, kidney and liver etc.
