PLATELETS

Platelets (thrombocytes) are colourless blood cells that play an important role in blood clotting. Platelets stop blood loss by clumping and forming plugs in blood vessel holes. Platelets are only about 20% of the diameter of red blood cells, the most numerous cell of the blood. The normal platelet count is 150,000-350,000 per micro-liter of blood. In case of low platelet count, excessive bleeding may be possible that could be fatal.

THROMBOCYTOPENIA

Thrombocytopenia is the medical term for a low blood platelet count. Thrombocytopenia often occurs as a result of a separate disease, such as Dengue or an immune system problem, or as a medication side effect. Thrombocytopenia may be mild and cause few signs or symptoms. In rare cases, the number of platelets may be so low that dangerous internal bleeding can occur.
Thrombocytopenia usually improves when the underlying cause is treated. Sometimes medications and blood transfusion can help to treat chronic thrombocytopenia. Don’t go for blood transfusion, try Ayurvedic medicine.
